  • 1.  10 Minute Plays

Hello! I am currently a college student in a theatre education program, and I am in desperate need of a 10-Minute play or scene from a show for my Directing class.  I would prefer a dramatic piece with a smaller cast, if possible. Definitely no more than four characters. Suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Are you willing to do classical? If so, I have a good scene from Julius Caesar Act 4 Scene 2 that has only a handful of actors

Have you read Fog by Jim Gordon, published by Heuer? Four charcters, POWERFUL piece with a man and woman in nursing home, son and nurse. Maybe 12 minutes or so I would say. Worth a read, whether you do it or not.

There's a great short play called LOYALTIES.  See the description below.  You can get it from Samuel French.  You don't realize they are in Germany until the end.  It can be very disturbing, if directed correctly.

Two couples in Weimar Germany gather around a table in celebration of the new good economic and spiritual times they are enjoying. The conversation sours, however, when one of the party members exposes his thoughts on what patriotism and military honor really mean to him.

Two suggestions:  The Battle of Bull Run Always Makes Me Cry.  Also there is a book of short plays produced by the Naked Angels Issues Project.  Full of short pieces from years of doing the Issues Project in New York.  Playscripts hols the rights but the book is available through Amazon.com.

Sounds a lot like my college directing-class assignment.  I used the confrontation between Russell and Cantwell in the second act of Gore Vidal's The Best Man - the "I won't throw my mud if you don't throw your mud" scene between the two presidential candidates.  It's about ten minutes long, and it gives both characters a really strong conflict to play.  It's also a challenge in terms of blocking: since it simply presents two men talking in a hotel suite, you've really got to work to keep the scene from becoming visually static, but of course whatever movement you give them must be motivated.

Try contacting Actors Theatre of Louisville and their Education Department. They publish the student winners of their annual New Voices Project. Excellent 10 minute plays written by students.
