AS IT IS IN HEAVEN, available through Dramatists Play Service, is an all-female play with music about a Shaker community in Kentucky in 1838. It runs about 90 minutes.
Although it's not billed as a musical, it incorporates a dozen or so Shaker hymns, sung a cappella, and Shaker dances. The ensemble cast has speaking roles for nine women. When I directed it last fall I cast twelve women and gave the first three interrogation scenes to the extra cast members (as the playwright I could make these changes; other schools have contacted me with their own requests, usually granted.)
Over the last dozen years, since the Edinburgh and off-Broadway premieres, the play has been produced at colleges and high schools around the country and presented twice at KC/ACTF regional festivals. Set is as simple or as elaborate as desired and costumes are easy. There should be no language or content issues.
