Has anyone produced this musical? If so, what were the significant challenges? Was there enough for the chorus to do? Would you recommend it? ------------------------------------------- Maggie Ward Columbia MD -------------------------------------------

Hello! My troupe is doing The Addams Family this upcoming fall. We have not found any challenged thus far, but if any arise, I will be sure to tell you. ------------------------------------------- Rylie Farrar Nortonville KS -------------------------------------------

I'll be directing and producing The Addams Family in the fall too. I feel the chorus will be busy with fun ensemble numbers. There are also little feature moments built into the staging and songs.

    Hi Maggie,

An overview, synopsis, author info, songs, casting information and orchestral info can also be found at http://www.theatricalrights.com/addams-family. You can click on the green "Resources" button to find a prop list and costume information.

Here are a few notes that I have from the first few amateur productions:

Song #16C INTO THE MOON AND ME and Song #17 THE MOON AND ME

Page 86 - 87 is a perfect example of a great place to use all of the female dead ancestors in a sweet chorus number. On page 87 it says, "FESTER dances with the MOON and the STARS." I've seen this done in front of a black traveler curtain (although a black scrim would have been better). With nighttime lighting (pale and darker blue gel) on FESTER and the female ANCESTORS in front of a dark curtain (or behind a black scrim), rather than flying FESTER to the MOON, use the ANCESTORS to bring the MOON and some stars to FESTER. The number is FESTER'S romantic fantasy, so choreograph it as if it's on the earth in reality, but in the heavens in FESTER'S mind. One production created a large moon mask for one dancer dressed in black, and keeping her facing downstage (SOUTH PARK - style) she actually danced with FESTER, having FESTER do all of the turns.  Be creative with it.

Here are a few ways that directors have approached the Uncle Fester flying to the moon scene (Song #23 FINALE: MOVE TOWARD THE DARKNESS):

    1.    Page 115: FESTER appears, wearing a leather flight helmet and goggles. He has a rocket strapped to his back. Some groups have made a prop rocket, similar to the ACME rocket that the Roadrunner wore in the cartoons, which attaches with straps like a backpack to FESTER. When FESTER asks, PUGSLEY lights the rocket. This can be done by a gesture upstage of the rocket however you want. But no one needs to see any flame or smoke. One director told me that he tried to create a rocket that could shoot off some smoke, but that it became too problematic. So he used only sound effects. I know of at least one prop company that is building something, www.proprentalsny.com.

    2.    Page 116: FESTER exits, his rocket sputtering. THEN ROCKET IGNITION! GOMEZ, points out to the sky, as FESTER flies off. One production had FESTER run up the aisle and out of the theatre. As he reached the door a sound effect of a rocket was heard as every cast member was directed to move downstage a bit and look in exactly the same place following FESTER up into the sky towards the moon (wide eyes following FESTER from the lower right hand side of the rear wall to the upper left hand side - there is music to cover this). From here there have been a few different approaches taken:

    a.    As the cast and music followed FESTER to space, the actor playing FESTER ran backstage and up a small staircase placed under the hanging moon upstage and above (and masked by) the entire cast. The cast kept looking at FESTER to the upper left hand side of the back wall, but the audience actually saw FESTER and the MOON behind the cast.
    b.    One group made a small doll of FESTER and his rocket (about 12 inches long) that they pulled with fishing line and pulleys across the cyc towards the MOON, which was very funny.
    c.    A more recent group used projections, projecting a small FESTER moving towards the MOON and then having the MOON smile.

If you are not able to have FESTER run up the aisle, you could have him run offstage. You can always use the dead ancestors to help with this as well - helping/escorting FESTER to the MOON. Fortunately it is a lighthearted musical comedy, so sweet and whimsical works well whatever you choose to do.

If you decide to do the show and come up with another creative way of approaching the scene, let me know and I'll add it to the list.

Hopefully a few of the people who have directed the show will weigh in as well.

Finally, there will be a workshop about directing THE ADDAMS FAMILY (and BIG FISH) at the Thespian Festival and the EdTA National Conference in Cincinnati.

    Thanks!

I am producing this musical in the Fall as well, so any information you can share with Maggie and me would be most appreciated. Maggie, I am thinking the the chorus can be padded with multiple ideas; one of them I am considering is to have them come in and out of scenes to 'listen' in on various bits. I also am probably going to have them as part of the scene transition teams. Heck, now that I am thinking about it, they could sit around the audience at times, as well. I want to really add a lot of kids to this show, so I will be happy to continue to share anything I come up with--and would appreciate any ideas you have, as well! My reason for doing this show is that I don't have a lot of 'singers' who can act; I have the reverse. I don't think the score is terribly strong/interesting (let's face it: it's no 'Hedwig...') but the characters will be strong and broad and easier for kids to play and the set and costume and lighting will be fun. My concern will be the tango numbers--very key to Morticia, especially. I have a girl who would rock the dancing, but her acting is ... meh? Morticia has to be HOT and seductive...my girl is ... oatmeal. A good dancing oatmeal, but oatmeal, nonetheless. And since we are doing it in the fall, I think it's a good fit. Lori

See, this is why I use this forum every day!! I have been considering The Addams Family for our musical next year, but have been a little unsure about some of the elements. This has been so helpful! Jim, the details about Fester...so incredibly helpful. I do have one question. I live in the Bible Belt and even though parents have sex and we all know they do...my administration gets a little antsy about "pushing too far" with these issues. I know that with Spamalot, you have provided cuts, exchanges, etc. for some of those moments. Do you have something like that for The Addams Family? I would love to put this show up, but I would never alter a production without permission. My thanks!! ------------------------------------------- Carolyn Greer Kentucky Thespians Owensboro HS #3161 -------------------------------------------

Has anyone had issue with the cast size? With only 10 speaking/singing roles outside of the chorus, I am worried I will have too many chorus kids who are dissatisfied with their roles and that I will have to "invent" things for them to do. I don't have issues being creative with my choruses, but I don't want to be put in a position where I have to be really creative and overstretch things. i think that leads to watering down shows and forcing a lot of theatricality that doesn't need to be there. ------------------------------------------- Mark Johnson Theatre Arts Teacher Farmington Hills MI -------------------------------------------

Regarding cast size you can always double/split your cast. You also have the ability to increase the size of the ancestor group. ------------------------------------------- Alan Strait Teacher CCSD Henderson NV ------------------------------------------- Sent via Higher Logic Mobile

Some great ideas on dealing with the core cast of 10. I think this is a great size for the leads, each role is so unique and gives kids lots of fun quirky characters to play. Adding a big ensemble of ancestors can only add to the fun. I envision the ancestors being the busiest group by far. I plan on having them present all the time. They are family! ------------------------------------------- Anne-marie Roberts Theatre Director Ann Arbor Public Schools Ann Arbor MI -------------------------------------------

So excited to produce this show as a multi-school production in Southern Nevada. We are using a large ensemble of ancestors who will be on stage most of the show! My husband is directing it and as we get more into it I'll keep you posted as to how we are solving issues. ------------------------------------------- Sharon Chadwick Las Vegas NV -------------------------------------------

Hi Carolyn, There are only two spots in THE ADDAMS FAMILY script that can be interpreted as "naughty" or suggestive (on pages 46 and 48), and in both cases the scripts all now contain the following: (Note to the Director: You have the option to cut the lines within the box.) The earliest perusals did not have this, but now all of the scripts do. So much of the relationship between Morticia and Gomez is in the hands of the director. It can be humorously romantic without being sexual. I hope that helps. ------------------------------------------- Jim Hoare Director of Licensing New York NY -------------------------------------------

    Hi,

As you know we did the full version at Addams at Jr. Festival very successfully and it was very easy to tone down.  I would be happy to help you out.  Also, Jim and Theatrical Rights was very willing to let us make changes to accommodate our needs.

We will be doing Addams Family this fall in black and white. The actors I have are amazing actors but most are not trained singers, so this show is great for us. Our ancestors will be everywhere. I have limited trained dancers so will need to modify according to skill, but have amazing movers and shakers for Morticia and Gomez.
The black and white version will give us an opportunity to train more make up artists and bring in some guest artists to do so. All in all it should be a great adventure. I found a doll house that we are transforming into a black and white version of the Addams Family home- including what our interior set will look like. We will be rad fling that off on show nights.

I am doing this production in the spring. For those of you who are doing this in the fall, I would love to read some feedback! My students are excited about the large ensemble. There a lots of creative ways to incorporate the ensembles in certain scenes. I plan on using the ghosts to move set pieces for scene changes as well. ------------------------------------------- Charlene Thomas Fine Arts Teacher Covenant Day School Matthews NC -------------------------------------------
