We are considering Flowers for Algernon for our fall production, the play version from Dramatic Publishing by David Rogers. If you have produced it before, I was curious if there was any backlash due to the use of the "r" word in the script describing Charlie's condition. I recall seeing a well-done high school production years ago and was moved by the substantive content. Though the word has thankfully decreased in use over the years, that may make its inclusion all the more startling to an audience. It could be viewed as an opportunity to make people think, but do the benefits outweigh the offense? Perhaps an explanatory note in the program? Thoughts for dealing with the sensitive subject matter? ------------------------------------------- Cary Rice Drama Director Louisville KY -------------------------------------------
