  • 1.  Seeking Favorite One Act Recommendations!

    Hi,
I'm a relatively new (4 years in, but this is only year 2 for one acts) director choosing a one act for our state competition this year... I'm wondering if anyone has any favorites to recommend.  I tend to prefer stories -- dramas or comedies -- with some "weight" to them, that challenge the cast.  Last year I did Bush's Asylum, and the front runner right now is Radium Girls... but I feel like that might not be quite right for us as a one act.  (I might want to save it to do full-length.)  Ideas?
    Thank you!

What cast size are you looking for and what's the expected gender breakdown? Are you looking for an ensemble play, or do you have an actor or two that you'd like to feature?

Depending on what you're looking for...

    Dramas:

    Booby Trap by Ed Monk

    And by Alan Haehnel

Face Forward: Growing up in Nazi Germany by Bredon Votipka

    Comedies:

11 Variations of Friar John's Failure by Yuri Baranovsky

The Grimm's Brother Spectaculathon by Don Zolidis

(Sorry... Can't think of any more right now... maybe after the coffee kicks in)

I second all of the above, plus the following:
"Aria da Capo," by Edna St. Vincent Millay
    An old standard warhorse.
"The Insanity of Mary Girard, by Laney ????
(you can find it at Sam French). Great vehicle for a strong young woman, plus an active ensemble of 6-10.

Ok, great questions.  So, we'll have a musical in rehearsal at the same time, so a small/mid sized cast -- 8-16, is fine.

I don't worry a lot about gender breakdown.  I have far more women than men, but sometimes it doesn't really matter what gender a character is, and other times female actors can rock a male character.  (Just finished Twelfth Night with 17 women and 3 men.)

Finally, I prefer an ensemble to suit the group I have now, but I'm also just looking to build my library of good script possibilities for future seasons -- so really all suggestions welcome...

I can't say enough about George Brant's play, "Elephant's Graveyard."  Challenging, Rich, Beautiful.

Second Samuel at Dramatic Publishing. It's for 7m 4w, but the playwright is open to switching genders (she happens to live in the same town where I teach). We did ours with 5m 6w, plus a few extras. Very funny and very moving with a very timely message. It's full length but I've seen a 55 minute version.

Antigone Now - 2w 1m, plus a chorus  from 1-8 people. A modern version of Antigone.

Mr. Flannery's Ocean.5w 3m. A charming one act about a crusty old man who thinks he owns the ocean off the coast of England.

I'll have more suggestions once I get back to work and can look through my bookshelf.

I Never Saw Another Butterfly.  Very powerful, has some featured actors with a strong ensemble.  My students loved doing and have been begging to do it again.

SO MANY great titles, and some of these lead to more once I got going... thank you!  I have a nice collection started.  If any more come to you, please feel free to add.
