  • 1.  Hairspray - Edna ... casting a girl?

In the middle of auditions for Hairspray and am lacking options for males to play Edna.  Has anyone ever cast it as a girl?    If so, how'd it go?

Yes and it was amazing!  If you have the perfect student go for it!  Our production of "Hairspray" from 2 years ago is still getting rave reviews.  Break a leg & gender casting laws! LOL

I cast a girl last year and it went swimmingly. She had a lot of fun with it. Don't have any qualms about casting a female in the role.

My Edna was a senior girl. She played the role campy, so it still had the humorous essence. I could see casting a male if I had perfect females who didn't have roles. Our audiences didn't seem bothered by my choice either...and we're an hour outside of B'more, hon!
