I teach at a private girls high school where they wish to do a "Spring Sing," where each class chooses 5 songs, writes a script that incorporates them, and performs them in a competition at a public theatre. Money is charged, and it is a public performance (It unfortunately is sort of traditional in some of the private schools) My contention is that the use of published songs is illegal, and I'd like to know if there is a comparatively easy way to make them legal, such as an ASCAP license? I've always insisted on proper payment of royalties, and I'd so appreciate any input. Thank you!

Seems to me that the only way to make this legal, you would need to use songs from the public domain.
