Has anyone done "Tartuffe" for their main stage plays? What did you do about cast size (written for 12-ish)? I would like to do the play next year, but am concerned about having only 12 in the cast as my Drama Boosters are my main production support, and with only 12 families...yikes. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I did Tartuffe this season and my student's loved it!  Use as many people as possible backstage.  Invite all classes and have them critique the show (this will get the parents out).

I have done Tartuffe, and students loved it! We worked with a commedia dell'arte specialist to prepare for the show's character's archetypes during classes, and all of my classes loved doing that, even the ones not in the show. As for the smaller cast: double cast the play--one cast for one night, a second cast for a second night. I've done that for many shows, and it works out well. They take turns during blocking rehearsals, and those who are double cast really have to learn to take notes when they are not active on stage. It also helps when something comes up (as often does) and someone can't do the show later for various reasons--they have a built in understudy.

We did another Moliere (Learned Ladies) this year, and I included a maid ensemble who did scene change dances-- a lot of dusting, scurrying around, moving furniture... simple, but added some energy and music after the long scenes, and got a handful more people involved in a way that wasn't a huge time commitment for them but still got to be part of the fun of putting everything together over the last couple weeks.

    Hi Shane!

I've got a series of Moliere translations that are doing very nicely in high schools (half a dozen or so have gone on to state competitions), and I'd be happy to share copies with you.

In addition to full-length versions, I have also done 40-minute shortened variations, which means that if you wanted to combine "Tartuffe" with, say, "The Misanthrope" or "The Imaginary Invalid" or "The Doctor In Spite of Himself," you can double the cast size and make it a full "Evening of Moliere".

Please let me know if you'd like me to send you a script or two. You can check out all of the available titles at my website:
