Once you cover the basics, I'd recommend a 48 hour film project. They are so much fun and if they do it in your city it would be a cool way to involve the local community in your class work:

The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie - write, shoot, edit and score it - in just 48 hours!! |

I've also seen a lot of enthusiasm from students about creating their own music video for a favorite song.

Next year I'm going to be able to change my semester class, History of film to History of Film/Filmmaking. The history part I'm good with (but if you'd like to share any ideas you have....GREAT!!) The filmaking class is where I need to come up with some ideas and lessons. I know how to teach the basics, but what kind of projects do you do if you have a class like this?
