I'm looking for plays by Latino playwrights, especially those featuring Latino characters, for a high school production. We want to broaden our program's appeal to our growing Hispanic student population. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I highly recommend Nilo Cruz' Anna in the Tropics. With minor language cuts, it could be done in high school.

Check out his other plays as well!

Jose Cruz Gonzalez, Jose Casas, Roxanne Schroeder-Arce (not Latina herself, but writes beautiful Latino/a characters), Quiara Alegria Hudes

A google search on "Latino playwrights" should also offer a lot of great options.

I love Jose Rivera and Frederico Garcia Lorca. There's also Life is a Dream by Calderon de la Barca.

I would suggest Mi Vida Gitana, by Danel Malan

Infused with flamenco dance and Spanish language, this production is a modern, multi-cultural retelling of Romeo and Juliet.

The Oxcart by René Marqués and Macho Camacho's Beat by Luis Rafael Sánchez are older Puerto Rican plays that have been translated to English.

In the Heights is a newer one, and was very successful on Broadway.

    David,

Since you're in Northern Va (so am I), you might want to check with GALA Hispanic Theatre in DC. They might be able to refer you to some things that might not be on people's radar. They are a terrific company that produces shows specifically for Hispanic audiences.  http://www.galatheatre.org

One of my favorite shows is called ¡Bocón!, by a playwright called Lisa Loomer. It's a lot of fun and uses a Mexican/Central American myth of the weeping woman, La Llorona. Really fun show!
