We did this last year! What a great show! I got a styrofoam ball and had a tech kid crunch it up for me so that it was not perfectly round and had some lumps. When he reaches for it, he formed it as he was sitting up, so that it was hidden from the audience. It was placed on stage behind a small "snow drift" against the bench and was nested in some loose flakes. When he picked it up and was "packing it" in his hands, a few flakes fell and it looked very realistic. The ball itself was also very realistic. Let me know if you need more info, but it is pretty easy to do.
Have a good time with a fabulous play!

Subject: Almost, Maine snowball
I'm directing a production of Almost, Maine. I'd like a realistic-looking snowball that can be formed on stage during the performance by my actor, yet not melt. I DON'T want to use cotton-balls glued together. Any ideas? What has worked for you? What didn't work?
