The Perfect Musical for This Year

    Hi everyone -

I'm looking for suggestions for the perfect musical for my program for this year.  Here are my parameters:

    • Most of my talent and experience this year is among the girls.  I do have a couple of boys who are very solid, but I have several really talented girls.
    • I have a lot of YOUNG boys entering the program, so I don't want to do a show that's too "girly."  I'd like to have some solid opportunities for them in smaller roles.
    • My musical is no-cut, so I need something with a good chorus.
    • We've had a lot of change and transition in the program, so I need something that will really excite the kids.  Something they've heard of and preferably something more modern.

Any thoughts?  I'm considering "Into the Woods," and I'd also love some opinions of expanding out the chorus in that show.

    I'd appreciate any input!

    Allan

    Hi Allan,

You might take a look at ALL SHOOK UP! It's a lot of fun and has strong female roles, and cool guy roles that will attract more boys :)

Is Dreamgirls available? That might be fun. Or Thoroughly Modern Millie, Mary Poppins also come to mind.

We did The Drowsy Chaperone a few years ago and it was a lot of fun. Newer musical and so many fun parts. My kids loved it!

How about the school edition of Aida? Strong roles for both makes and females and plenty of space for ensemble work as well. And since it's written by Tim Rice and Elton John there is name recognition for the kids.

Have you considered Footloose? I think it's a great vehicle because of it's popular score, huge name recognition, and many featured roles for females. Also, it tells a story from the perspective of youth. I also think Catch Me If You Can is a fun, vibrant show with great music and great ensemble opportunities.

Sing Down the Moon: Appalachian Wonder Tales fits all of your requirements except that it does not have that name recognition...

    I teach high school, Jennifer.

BTW, thanks to everyone for the suggestions.  Unfortunately, I've done many of the shows listed in the last few years.  Also, I guess I should have mentioned that my casts (and my school) are not particularly diverse.  I can't do anything that requires a racially mixed cast (goodbye, Hairspray!).

We did Shrek & Godspell last year.  They were both wonderful! The music for both shows is great!

What about seussical! It takes a

few strong boys but a good number of girls. The cat can be a girl. It was also give a

chance to someone young to play jojo. Help develop that talent

    Hi Allan,

The high school edition of ROCK OF AGES should be on your radar as it sounds like it meets a lot of your requirements - Ready to Rock: Teens Perform ROCK OF AGES High School Edition! - Breaking Character

We are planning for an early 2016 release of this ROA high school edition so that schools can produce it as their Spring musical.  If you want to get your boys interested in musical theatre, here's one way that's sure to get their attention!

    Best,

    Abbie

I'll second the Seussical nomination (and yes, as mentioned above, The Cat in the Hat can be female and there is a separate conductor score for m/f Cat).

Also, I'd suggest The Addams Family. Great name recognition, great well-known characters (equally divided, it seems, between m//f) and the ability to add a ghostly chorus for days. And I'd bet if one of your girls has height, she could cross-dress as Lurch.

I second the Addams Family. I just did it this past spring and it was a hit. Having the ability to make the Ancestor chorus as big as you want is great and with the way they are written in the show they can be involved in the show more than just the big song numbers, i.e. set changes, messing with the non-Addams characters. I even choreographed a sword fight between Gomez and Morticia and had some Ancestors fight along side them and bring out the swords, it was great. Lot of potential in this show.

If you've done the shows listed above already, then...hmmm.

Wizard of Oz. We managed to do it with two boys in the cast and added an elementary cohort of 40 Munchkins. Fun. Makes lots of money. Personally, can't stand the musical, but recognize that it's well-loved.

Pippin could be fun, and doable-ish with a couple of good boys.

Shrek could be done. Plus it's lots of fun.

    Brain just died.
