I'm so envious - going to New York and seeing theatre sounds wonderful! I've been reading about the productions of Twelfth Night and Richard III at the Belasco. The plays are performed in repertory featuring Mark Rylance (in Twelfth Night he plays Olivia and in Richard III he's Richard).

Here's part of the description on the website:

Delightfully funny and refreshingly original, these classics are presented in the custom of how Shakespeare's plays were first staged, with an extraordinary all-male company playing male and female roles; actors participating in the pre-show ritual of dressing and preparing their make-up on stage, in front of the audience; music played live on traditional instruments; and lighting created almost exclusively by 100 on-stage candles, adding to the intimate atmosphere. This is timeless Shakespeare at its finest and most accessible... and it is not to be missed!

They even have seats starting at $25 on the stage!

Hey Maggie! I've been to NYC a lot and on every corner there's something to eat, but if you want a good place to eat with theater kids, I'd say take them to the Stardust Diner. It's not too far from Times Square, but all of the waiters are AMAZINGLY talented (if you google it, that makes more sense). Also, a really fun thing to do besides Times Square and the Empire State Building, is going to Rockefeller center and even going to the top of the Rock because you can see the beauty of New York! I hope this helps! Enjoy New York! ------------------------------------------- Kim Albanowski -------------------------------------------

If you aren't locked in to Glass Menagerie, don't go!  (not that it's not a good show or anything, but you're seeing three oft-produced shows, and all three are really heavy...two are from the same time period in theater...it just might feel monotonous...also, all FOUR of the shows you are seeing are very male-centered)

Other shows to see on Broadway --->
Matilda (my favorite musical on Broadway right now)
    Machinal
    Newsies
    Phantom of the Opera
Twelfth Night (GO SEE THIS IF YOU CAN!  One of the best Shakespearian shows I have EVER seen.  Everything is done in traditional 1600s style...real dripping, messy candles lighting the stage, costumes made BY HAND- no zippers, elastic, or velcro here!, hand crafted makeup, all male cast)

    Off-Broadway --->
    Avenue Q
Peter and the Starcatcher (one of the best written contemporary comedy non-musicals that features a strong female lead.  Incredibly imaginative staging---makes you realize what magical theater you can create with everyday objects)

    Off-Off --->
    For Colored Girls

Things to do, free or cheap:
Visit the 9/11 memorial (tickets are free, but you need to reserve beforehand)
Ride the ferry to Staten Island (again, free!)
I second a trip to the Museum of the Moving Image---you can also see what movies they are showing and coordinate your trip with a show!
Visit the High Line---an old elevated train track converted into a park!
Visit Brooklyn Bridge Park, then walk across the footbridge to the promenade---great views of Manhattan!
Take a walking tour of the Columbia University and/or NYU campuses.  A good DIY walk.

    Have a GREAT trip!

There are some good suggestions here for NYC.  I LOVED Pippin!  Your kids will love it.  Other things I've done with students that have been good---

Go to MOMA.  It's great to split up in, and really prompts creative/divergent thinking.

Go to the Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side http://www.tenement.org  They have set up a tenement building like it was at the turn of the century and tell the stories of the people who lived there.  There are interesting restaurants nearby.  Congee Bowery (a huge Chinese restaurant) is right near the exit.  Katz' Delicatessen and the New Museum (another modern art museum) are also within a short walk.

The double decker bus tours also offer tours of Radio City Music Hall which are fun.  I recommend Top of the Rock over the Empire State Building--it's a much better tour.

If you want to see how the other half lives, there is a upper class home from 1800's New York you can tour--the Merchant's House:  http://www.merchantshouse.org/

Don't miss the 9/11 memorial and museum.  You do have to get tickets in advance.  Allow lots of time--there are huge lines and you have to go through security.

I'm not a fan of spending all your time in the Times Square area--these are suggestions in other sections of town.  Enjoy!

Favorite kid eateries:  John's Pizza on West 44th, the Edison Cafe and Papaya Dog (this one's cheap as well).  One of my favorite delis is Katz's (where Harry met Sally!).

Walk through Lincoln Center and Central Park.  Walk through Greenwich Village.

Museum of Natural History is a lifetime fave of mine, but takes time to do it right.

Go to the Today Show (outside the studio) early in the morning to get up close.  I usually take kids who want to go (which is usually most of them) and leave my chaperones with the kids who want to sleep a bit.

One of our favorite Off-Broadway shows is Fuerza Bruta.  Kids LOVE it and you will, too.  You will start a great discussion about what theatre is and can be - and be entertained.  The kids can even get wet and messy if they choose to or stand back and just watch the fun.  It's in Union Square.

So much to do, so little time!  lol

I have to disagree with someone saying not to see Glass Menagerie. It was one of the best theatrical experiences I have ever had. Cherry Jones' Amanda Wingfield is a master class in acting. I can't even call it acting, she channels Amanda, she is the Greek idea of the character taking over the actor.

Godot is the one I'd drop but then I'm not sure my students could sit thru  it! LOL

12th Night is amazing, too. Shakespeare's Globe changes the way you see Shakespeare. Richard III is good, interesting concept.
