Ginny - songs (music theatre or not) are powerful triggers for lots of associations. I'm a sucker for songs from any show I've worked on, in any aspect.
Ultimately, I'm looking for how a student can "sell" a song, "act" the number, convey the truth of that moment IN THE SHOW, rather than what they can do in a technical sense. [Always assuming they can sing - pitch is important ;) ]
I'm not sure that really answers your question but part of that is that I like whatever song I'm listening to at the moment. As CSN would say, I tend to "love the one [I'm] with" when it comes to audition songs.

Jerf-out of curiosity, do you have songs you personally enjoy hearing at auditions?

This popped up in my feed today (thanks Karen BAil) and I thought it was definitely worth sharing. As author Noel Katz points out, these are not for everyone. "The best audition song highlights the things you do best, better than others. That's going to be different for every person."
Perhaps these will spur students to look a little farther afield?
