  • 1.  Pre-Tests for Acting

    Posted 05-14-2015 13:00

Is anyone using a Pre-Test for an entry level semester long High School Acting class?  I would greatly appreciate any info and/or collaboration as my District is moving to using subject specific Pre/Post tests to measure student growth.

    Thanks in advance!!!

I don't, but it'd be pretty easy to do.  I did something last year for one of my professional growth goals - I assigned my kids a monologue before going over all the acting technique stuff that I teach.  Had them do what they could to develop it, then scored their performance using our state Thespian scoring rubric.  Then I taught everything I normally teach and had them perform monologues again, scoring them the same way.  The growth was huge (duh).

Where do you find the state Thespian Scoring Rubric?  I would love to see that!

I do basically the same thing as the others.  However, I also give a start of the year pre-test on theatre vocab.  Since learning the "language of the theatre" is a vital part of our teaching, this is a highly concrete way to measure growth with a semester one and semester two final on basic terms.  Besides, administrators love the literacy tie-in.

I give a formative assessment at the start of the year that includes identifying theatre and acting terms/vocabulary as I believe others have stated. It gives a good overview of each student's basic understanding of theatre and acting in general. I also use KWL charts as checkpoints when entering into new show genres or learning modules. As a class we discuss what we already know, what we want to know more about, and then at the end, what we've learned. At the end of the year, I give a similar term/vocabulary assessment to measure progress. It isn't a grade for them, but I use it to assess how well I've covered the areas of need during the year.
