I would create a standard muslin flat, place toggles above and below the desired reveal and size and prime as normal being sure to back paint the flat as well. Then, create your cut away wall detail and simply insert it between the toggles making sure to provide a 3 or 4 inch surround around the cut-away detail so you'll have some surface to glue the muslin to-- do that and then after the glue sets, cut away the muslin from the front and you will have a section of wall with lath exposed.
