Any fresh ideas to keep new, never ever high school guys.  We've done amazing mature shows in the past then had a huge group graduate.  Last year ensemble cast performed Freaky Friday....this year I have a great new group of guys with zero experience.

We've already done Bring it On, Mary Poppins, Cinderella...can't bear to do High School Musical.

    Suggestions?

Footloose, although it depends heavily on guys. Are you wanting a musical that guys would like?
Wizard of Oz is also good.

You might look at All Shook Up.  I had a few new guys audition for this show possibly because of the Elvis music.  It is also a fun show with a lot of energy.

    Hi.

We had a lot of fun with Urinetown.

It seems to attract the Monty Python loving boys (sophisticated bathroom humor), and it is easier to produce than Spamalot.
It really is a brilliant show. Check it out.

    Hope this helps.

Not just funny.  When analyzed, it has a lot to say about environmental concerns and has a surprise whe the politics of the show is discussed.

"We Will Rock You" and "All Shook Up" are fun and possibly appealing.

I second URINETOWN, it's a blast! Guys would probably be into WE WILL ROCK YOU, but Galileo sings HIGH, and it's challenging. You might have better luck with Rock of Ages (there's a school edition), ADDAMS FAMILY, or maybe ZOMBIE PROM? The year I had a lot of guys I wanted to do SPAMALOT, but it wasn't available.

Godspell is Friday fun & zany, not many lines for anyone except Jesus & Judas but 10 people each get a song.

Annie Get Your Gun is fun - there’s Bill, the other 2 guys & the Chief.

Li’l Abner has Abner, Marryin’ Sam, Bullmoose & Pappy

The Mystery of Edwin Drood has the Narrator, Jasper, the “priest”, and The brother

This year I’m doing Hoop, the Basketball Musical (a HS Musical-ish Show) but not with “pop” music. The music is more an Andrews sister style so it has that classic musical feel. There are 3 man leads, 2 males supporting, a great featured male role & a whole team. 7 males sing plus there is room for many solo pieces in songs. We just had our 1st Run Thru last night and the boys are loving it.

Have you heard of Like You Like It? It's Shakespeare's As You Like It set at a mall in the 1980s (full disclosure: I'm one of the writers). Broadway Licensing/Playscripts handles the licensing. Super high energy and a lot of large and small roles for guys.

Plugs aside, here are some shows in the canon: Joseph, Guys and Dolls, Damn Yankees, Man of La Mancha, Bye Bye Birdie, How To Succeed, Jesus Christ Superstar, Camelot, Big, Footloose, Anything Goes, Fiorello

Best wishes for a great production,

    Questions:
is Godspell difficult for folks who are just trying theater for the first time?
Does REN in Footloose have to be a great dancer?
Is Urintown appropriate for a Christian School?

Do you usually pick a musical not knowing the male talent you have?

The music in Godspell is difficult but I did it my 2nd year directing & it turned out great!

I always look at who I have & pick a play based on that. I don’t pre-Cast but if I know I have 3 good males & 4 good females, I look for a play with 7 leads.
