Hi there. Does anyone have experience using animated projections for sets/backgrounds. If so, what can I expect to pay for a full show packet? Are there any companies that you would recommend or ones I should stay clear of?
    Thanks!

    Hi Amy,
I have been using projections for a couple of shows now. Most recently we did Something Rotten and ordered the projection packet from Broadway media. It was a game changer for us. When not getting them from a company, I have a parent who is a wiz at creating projections, both still and animations, and so we use him. Our projections are run by one of our tech students. Depending on the show, perhaps there are some students that can help create what you are looking for.

    Good Luck!

I've used animated projections from Broadway Media for two shows: Into the Woods & Beauty and the Beast. I believe they're the company MTI uses. They've run approximately $900 a show.

We have been using projections for nearly every musical we do (we only do musicals) for the past six years.

Sometimes they are of my own creation, including animation (for example https://youtu.be/o5Uaa2iiHpg) and sometimes we have purchased them.

Theatre Avenue are a delight to work with.   https://theatreave.com/

Rick Frendt is also a delight.  Rick Frendt Theatre Projections

This year we are using Broadway Media for the first time for Anastasia (and using the award winning original Broadway projections!) Broadway Media - Theatrical Resources

Depending on what you are doing – you can expect to pay between $500 and $1000.

The first two send you a series of JPG or MP4 files to integrate with your own projection software.  Broadway Media has their own software that you use.

Amy, Years ago I directed Addams Family and used a combination of built sets and projections, which worked great. We used Broadway Media for the projections and were happy with the results. Pricing was within our budget and they were easy to work with.

We didn't use all of the projections available, but it was nice to pick and choose.

We also created our own projections years later for She Kills Monsters using original student artwork.

    Hi Amy!

This is Melissa, the Community Manager with Broadway Media. I'm so excited to learn that you're considering implementing digital scenery for your upcoming production! I just attended a local high school's production of ANASTASIA this weekend, and was simply blown away by not only the artwork and effects, but also how seamless the transitions between scenes were! It's a game changer for keeping audiences engaged. What show are you producing?

For all of the shows in our catalog, Broadway Media has two different packages:

    • Standard License: Script-Accurate scenery and software that doesn't break the budget
    • Pro License: Mapping-capable, customizable scenery with advanced projection capabilities

If the show you are doing is not in our catalog, have no fear! We have a vast collection of animated drops that can be pieced together to create your unique vision.

For any of the above options, I'd recommend chatting with one of our Production Specialists; they're fellow Theatre-Makers that will chat with you about your organization's setup and specific needs. They'd be happy to provide you with a free, no-obligation quote, simply click here.

Oh, and if you happen to be attending ITF this year, be sure to come a visit! We'll have a booth demonstrating our resources and workshops highlighting best practices/tips and tricks!

    Hi, Amy.
We used Broadway Media's digital projections for Anastasia last month and it was an overwhelming success.  It was the first time we used projections and the learning curve was not bad.  Our Broadway Media reps, Gabrielle Burton and Erin Betman, were wonderful to work with and answered every question for us.  They even asked for measurements of our stage to work with us on the type of projector we would need.   They do rent the projectors, but it was less expensive to get one locally.  The digital package was very reasonable, about $850, but the rental for the projector was close to $2500.  Since we were saving on lumber (no sets of flats required using the digitals) it worked out.  The results were amazing and people could not stop talking about how much it enhanced the experience, at least for this show.  They also give you the projections really early with a watermark on it so you can use them all through the rehearsal process, if you have a projector.
    Good luck!

I will be honest, I used the ones for All Together Now and met with my stage manager afterwards. WE figured out it was cheaper to purchase a long throw projection device and then I went to canva and created my own images for the next show. It was received just as well as the ones for All Together Now and kiddos got to help design the backdrops.
