One of the things that I am excited for is the possibilities of what a unified set of arts standards will bring to theatre education. By using a similar framework we can get to the core of what it means to be an artist. I am a huge believer in talking to my students about what arts means to them in the world and how they may see themselves as artist. By highlighting where the various disciplines are similar we are also creating huge advocacy momentum for our field. Many of our colleagues in music and visual arts are much better with advocacy then theatre has been. I would say that is true for dance and it is very true of media arts. Rather than being five different groups, we can be one. We can speak with a strong unified voice. We can create change. When there is change, it can be scary. It takes risk to walk into the unknown, but isn't that what art is all about?
I am so excited to be starting out my career at this time, as I will get to see and be part of the creation and implementation of the Core Arts Standards!
