Beyond the workshops

Today was a fantastic day at the conference!

This is my fourth conference and I realized something important.  While I do enjoy and gain so much from taking the workshops and master classes, there is something even bigger happening here.

How often is it that we get to spend time with other like minded professionals from our field?  There is such an immediate bond that is created when I meet other teachers here.  We share many of the same issues, passions, and joys.  We discover that other teacher's stories are not unlike our own.  In my particular case I am lucky to have eleven other high school theatre programs in my district, but even so, I am the only theatre teacher at my particular school.  The friendships and the networking that are created here can not be understated.

It is so wonderful to know that we are not alone.  There are others just like us, working hard to inspire and engage students on a daily basis.  That in itself is worth the price of admission.

Lindsay,
We posted a conference "Justification letter" on schooltheatre.org to help you make the case to your principal. We will do the same next year and hope that is helpful to you. I met a couple teachers at the conference this year who used it successfully to gain support for attending.

This is something that I am sure is different in each school system. This year I am doing a combination of what you talk about. My union has negotiated for funds and sub days that teachers can use for PD. There are many teachers that want to use this so the amount is limited. If at the end of the school year there is money or days left they will sometimes authorize allowing us to use more. I typically use some of my own leave as well (especially when I have to travel a longer distance). While I am here, I save all of my receipts (food, hotel, travel, etc). I then give all of it to my accountant who is able to use it to help lower my tax bill. I will point out that there are min amounts you have to spend over a percentage of your AGI so make sure to talk to an accountant for a professional opinion as to if that would work in your case.
Next year the conference is in the summer so there will be no need to worry about sub days! (unless you have year round school). I hope to see you at an conference one day!

I am so excited to hear that this is your fourth conference. I would love to be able to attend, but I am struggling to find a way to pay for the conference. Is this something that you normally budget into your personal expenses for the year, does your school pay for you, or is it a I'm-going-no-matter-what type of thing? Please let me know!
