2019 Annual Report

The 2019 JumpStart Theatre Annual Report is now available! Take a dive inside the 2018-19 school year to learn more about the organizations, performances, teachers, and students involved in the program.

This has been a year of explosive growth for JumpStart Theatre:

  • A regional partner was selected to continue and expand the Cincinnati program, and three schools were added, for a total of 12;
  • Three St. Louis schools will continue into their second year of the program;
  • Three schools were added to the San Diego program, for a total of six;
  • Two new regional partners were added in Frostburg, Maryland and Atlanta, Georgia; both have selected three schools each to begin productions in 2019-20;
  • The first class of JumpStart Theatre graduates continues to build momentum and sustain their programs.

Thank you for your donations and involvement that will continue to sustain this momentum and change more lives in the coming year. We are grateful for your support.

JumpStart Theatre is entirely supported by gifts and grants. Your donation provides access to musical theatre for underserved students and under-resourced schools. Help shape lives with your support!

Kicking Off A New School Year

The first JumpStart Theatre kick-off conference call took place earlier this month, bringing representatives from all five JumpStart Theatre regions together to prepare for the 2019-2020 school year. In addition to addressing basic business matters, partners exchanged ideas and advice to help each other succeed. One topic addressed was how to let students know that a musical theatre production was going to happen for the first time at their school.

Student-created sign displayed outside of the school.

STAGES St. Louis and La Jolla Playhouse shared examples from their first year, including creating call boards outside of teachers' rooms, making use of the robocall notification system in the school district, and hanging a banner right in front of the main school entrance. Regular calls will be held throughout the year to facilitate knowledge sharing throughout the regions.

 A Welcoming Environment

Mountain City Center for the Arts (Frostburg, Md) attended a back-to-school night for one of their first JumpStart Theatre Schools. The administration gave them time during the opening session to introduce the program and speak to parents about how the students would benefit.

 Later in the week, an MCCA staff member taught a piano lesson to a newer student who has been incredibly shy. She happened to attend the school where they had given the presentation and arrived at her lesson, absolutely gushing about how thrilled she was for the opportunity. "My friends and I are so excited that now we have a piece of something at school where we can be ourselves, like we can at MCCA."

It's clear that MCCA has created a welcoming environment for everyone and we're eager to see how that translates to the JumpStart Theatre schools in this rural area.

ETF, in collaboration with New York City-based companies iTheatrics and Music Theatre International (MTI) has created JumpStart Theatre, a three-year scalable program designed to build sustainable musical theatre programs in underserved schools that previously had none.

ETF operates JumpStart Theatre through a national network of regional theatre company partners who are selected based on their track-record of success in running educational programs for children. JumpStart Theatre partners are: Alliance Theatre, Atlanta, Ga.; La Jolla Playhouse, La Jolla, Calif.; Mountain City Center for the Arts, Frostburg, Md.; Stages St. Louis, St. Louis, Mo.; The Children’s Theatre, Cincinnati, Ohio.

JumpStart Theatre aims to:

  • be sustainable and implemented in underserved middle schools nationwide, engaging as many students as possible in all aspects of theatre,
  • prepare students for high school, college, and the workforce by instilling the 21st-century skills of collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and creativity.

Thanks to all the JumpStart Theatre Partners and Supporters
