  • 1.  Jane Austen but darker?

    Hi all,

    I'm trying to find the best way to showcase my acting class and incorporate some of their preferences into my show selection. They all like the idea of a period piece, some kind of classic literary adaptation. Several are pulling for a Jane Austen but others would like something darker or more dramatic. I'm interested in a Gothic piece that would have lots of room for theatricality and movement work. Any ideas? The frontrunner right now is probably Frankenstein's Mary Shelley by Rachel Atkins.

    I think EMILY BRONTE, TEENAGE NECROMANCER might land right in that sweet spot.

    Polly Teale's Jane Eyre is a fun ensemble piece.  It is a little disjointed with lots of short scenes, but that's usually the case with adaptations.

    We did this one several years ago and it was well received.  The ensemble nature of the piece made it easy to rehearse.

    I've ready just about every version of Frankenstein there is, plus some of Dracula and Sleepy Hollow, but nothing is hitting quite the right note of freshness, theatricality, challenge, and ensemble collaboration. If you have other suggestions of period/historical drama with a bit of the supernatural, drop them here. Thank you!
