I organized a play selection committee. Any student who wanted to participate could be on the committee. I had a large stack of scripts that I said I was looking at. The committee divide up into small groups and took one, two, or three scripts, read them and then came back to the committee with their ...

Just be sure you don't upset the fire inspector or fire marshall. You won't want to be on their radar or you'll never get anything done. ------------------------------ John Perry Retired Theatre Teacher ------------------------------

I'd highly recommend the adaptations of Aristophanes by Don Zolidis. I love his version of The Birds and it follows the original with a few updates. My students loved it and it is written in scenes that are easy to schedule for rehearsal. I also like his adaptation of The Frogs (which he wrote for my ...

I had the same problem when I retired 5 years ago. I was able to give away some scripts to various people online. It was easy to mail them and I only asked for postage. I had a huge collection of tech books that I knew I would not use again and so I announced I would have a yard "sale" on a certain day ...

Yes, Historical Emporium makes excellent costumes. We have some for our annual Old Louisville Victorian Ghost Walk and they are very well made.  https://www.historicalemporium.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAmKiQBhClARIsAKtSj-nmQwSneY33Gx_cfuzVGyg_6aqdu6i67HVS90DNTnOMqdMY4ltIuqoaAg4gEALw_wcB ------------------------------ ...

My favorite edition for all of Shakespeare is the Neil Freeman edition, Applause First Folio Editions but they are difficult to find. He takes all the editions known and puts them together in the way he thinks Shakespeare really wrote them. And he notates everything! Not much annotation but the editions ...

I think the best place to start with The Taming of the Shrew is to realize it is not a knock-down, slapstick comedy. There is only one place in the script where there is any sort of violence and that is when Kate slaps Petruchio. It is a comedy of Petruchio trying to convince Kate that they are more ...

We have a local organization, LVL1, that is a "hacker space". If you are a member you can use their 3D printers, laser cutter/engraver, and their CDC. You might check around for a similar organization and there might be someone there that could help you. I have a former student who is a member and sometimes ...

Sorry, didn't want to be too harsh but ethical issues as to rights, performance, etc just set me off. I've seen too many productions here in Louisville done illegally and too many schools ("reputable" performing arts programs) making changes that I know were not approved by the licensing agent.  Thanks ...

No, no, no. This is illegal and unethical. And it is direct opposition to the spirit of IB education. This project should never have been started. It is wrong no matter how the performance is presented.  I'm sorry if this sounds harsh. ------------------------------ John Perry Retired Theatre ...

Love the show, saw it off-broadway in NYC. A bit male heavy but I think it can be adapted if needed. ------------------------------ John Perry Retired Theatre Teacher ------------------------------

I love Don Zolidis' The Birds and The Frogs. Both are faithful adaptations of the Aristophanes original.  https://www.playscripts.com/play/1158 https://www.dramaticpublishing.com/frogs-a-modern-adaptation FYI, we were the first school to produce The Frogs. My kids loved it! ------------------------------ ...

I like this one by my friend Bill McNulty. Actors Theatre of Louisville has done it for years and it scared the crap out of many of my students when I took them to student matinees.  https://www.playscripts.com/play/1512 ------------------------------ John Perry Retired Theatre Teacher --- ...

There's appropriation and bad appropriation. I don't see how this is inappropriate appropriation (!). I think your students are confusing the two. This might be a good time to investigate proper and improper appropriation. Appropriation is how different cultures share their art forms. The Hip-Hop culture ...

Amazon has Ben Nye Student Makeup Kits. You could make a list on Amazon and people could purchase as a contribution. The kits on Amazon are about $30. Is that too high? Andy Perry ------------------------------ John Perry Retired Theatre Teacher ------------------------------

For a good Greek comedy you can't beat Don Zolidis' adaptations of The Birds (Playscripts) and The Frogs (Dramatic). Don wrote The Frogs for my school and we had a great time producing it.  For drama I like Antigone with the Fagles translation, Medea with the Allistair Elliot translation (the one Diana ...

I'm a big fan of Don Zolidis' The Birds and The Frogs. Both are good adaptations of the originals but you do have to pay royalties. I also like The Children of Hercules adaptation by Phil Willmott. It has a great refugee theme. You can check here:  http://philwillmott.org/index.html  I have the script ...
