Hi Joel That may have been me. In spring of 23, the Millinery class had an assignment where they each had to create a hat from a "fascinator" that was as high and big as possible while being as light as possible. They requested the help from my Structural Design class to calculate the ratio between the ...

Space space space, height, and. . .space. Often, these structures are designed by people who share a far different priority tree than we do. For example, in our new shop space at NIU, I traded having the scene shop painted by the contractors for an extra four digits of square footage of floor space. ...

I agree 100% with what Kristi and Goerge have said - it really depends on what role(s) your facility/organization needs a TD to fill. I teach the craft of Technical Direction at a graduate level and have been the "TD" for companies, for touring productions, for facilities, etc, and each job came with ...

One of my grad TDs just designed a petal drop for a very small theatre and an intimate show. She is using a piece of PVC with a small silent computer fan at one end. Preshow, the crew can load the PVC from a ladder. ------------------------------ Tracy Nunnally NIU - Professor/TD/Area Head (tnunnally@niu.edu) ...

Hi Elizabeth I know this can be a shock to the system, especially when you have been building sets for a long time with none of this type of push back. I have been a TD for about 40 years and I did have this happen once. I was the TD for the largest Class A (same as LORT A in the US) theatre in town, ...

Hi all Casters have always been a burr under my saddle, so over many years of being a TD, I have come up with some best practices that work well for me. Maybe some of these will help you out. First, trace the path of force from the load on the wagon to the floor. If casters are attached to the underside ...

Hi all FWIW, I often suggest taking a slightly different mindset when dealing with this issue. A theatre space is a place for telling a story, and fog, smoke, and haze is often part of that storytelling exercise. All theatres should be equipped with heat detectors (or other fire detection systems which ...

When we presented Metamorphosis, we staged it in the proscenium house, but put the audience on stage in a thrust configuration to close the aesthetic distance.  We built a wood framed pool and bought an outdoor pool liner to contain the water.  We created a sloped floor in the pool give the director ...

Hi Jennifer I have done many productions of Mary Poppins, some with multiple casts. One major thing to keep in mind is the flying rehearsal time. While dance numbers and blocking rehearsals can be done with multiple actors at the same time, flying rehearsals cannot. Each flying actor needs their own ...

Hi Al As you are shopping for vendors, you should be aware of the ANSI Standard for Theatrical Makeup Mirror Lighting. It can be found by putting "ESTA ANSI Standards" into Google and look for Standard E1.55. All theatrical ANSI standards can be downloaded for FREE. Hope this helps :-) Tracy Nunnally ...

Hi all Please take a moment to check out this article in Stage Directions.  In a nutshell, the Live Event Industry in North America is hoping to replicate the successful #RedAlert event in the UK and Europe by displaying red lights from 9pm to 12am on September 1.  The intent is to send a signal ...

Hi Lesleigh From your signature, this appears to be a college student.  If so, no need to involve the parents (in fact, if the student is over 18, you can't).   If this is a required course, as many of mine are, and you have a student who has to take the course but refuses to be a part of the activity, ...

Hi all I am the owner of Vertigo (as well as a tenured university professor, which is why I lurk here).  First of all, to Angela: Thank you for the kind words.  I hope my team did their best to bring your dreams to life and give you and your students an amazing experience. To Theresa - Each ...

I would advise against Plyron unless you have a specific application for it.  Typically, the top layer of a stage floor is "sacrificial," meaning that it can be painted, cut, screwed into, etc, and the sheets can be replaced easily and cheaply.  Plyron is only made by one manufacturer so it is typically ...

Hi all A very good friend of mine just started a brand new company called "ReSet" that seems to be kind of an eBay for sets and other tech theatre stuff.  I saw her in passing at USITT last week, so I only know a little about it, but I think it might be super useful for this forum. Check it out ...

Hi all This is clearly a hotly debated topic, and many entrenched in their camps.  I bring you the perspective of a 53 year old ETCP Certified IATSE rigger who is also a tenured professor at a major university and the owner of a company that uses fly systems in all types of theatres all over the world ...
