Hi All, Anyone have some script recommendations for one acts? Helping my Lit teacher colleague find an appropriate one act for 9th graders that deals with the themes of transformation and/or holding multiple identities at once. Can be comic/serious. Thanks, Joan********Joan JubettDirector of High School ...

There are a ton of roles you could play. I had a lot of trans/non-binary kids in my production who played numerous major roles: Orcus, Kaliope, Tilly, Miles. Have you had a conversation with your teacher about how they envision the characters in the production? Also I encourage you to remember that ...

Hi All, I'm toggling between a bunch of play choices for the fall and I'm looking for opinions, especially from folx who have done these shows. FYI we have a "no cut" policy so I'm always looking for large cast plays. At the moment we have a lot of strong female identifying actors and lots of non binary ...

We just did the original version in our high school. The kids had a blast. You NEED a fight choreographer/director for this show. Can't stress this enough. Maybe you are one and you can check it off of the list! If students miss rehearsals, that will slow the process down because of the fight choreo. ...

Can't necessarily think of any books but I did this for The Crucible. The main thing is creating/working in diagonals with multiple characters and/or creating moments of two characters working in profile to the audience. I personally think it's okay (and sometimes even great!) for characters to have ...

Hi All, Is there a list anywhere of possible tech/design PDs for HS teachers? I'm not holding my breath at the moment, as I struggle to convince my administration to hire a tech director/teacher/production coordinator colleague, so I think I need to refresh my memory and get some solid training in ...

Hi Katie, We did the Crucible a few years ago (right before COVID) and we didn't use dialects (we don't have time to work on that given our intense rehearsal schedule). We did do the play word for word, however, and students had to navigate the syntax/language in a way that was unfamiliar to them. Regardless ...

Hi, I'm based in NYC and we don't have a tech director at our school. We want to use a smoke machine for our upcoming production but I'm pretty sure we need a fire warden to disable the fire alarm and be present for the production and then reenable the fire alarm panel once clear. Anyone know about ...

This is a very important conversation you are starting - one that me and my performing arts colleagues talk about non stop. I appreciate that you have posted an anonymous survey for your students where they can potentially feel safe to talk freely about the curriculum. Joan ******** Joan Jubett(she/her) ...

I'm pretty sure that with Google Forms you can create a single Google Spreadsheet that can be linked to other google forms - so keeping everything in the same spreadsheet can last over many years...in terms of data collection, spreadsheets like excel and google sheets are really a useful (and usually ...

Hi All, I just want to thank you for all of the posts/advice regarding advocating for a TD. I'm also noticing that there are a lot of gray areas when it comes to job description and expectations and it's such a good idea to really plan it out in advance given what we know about the particular job in ...

Hi All, I am the only theater teacher in my high school (it's a small private institution with about 250 kids) and we hire out set/costume/lighting designers when we do shows. I am not a TD. I teach theater, but from a performance angle. For a while now, my department has been advocating for a TD. I ...

Cold reading is never fun for students, unless they're good at it. Also, some students learn differently and so cold reading can be really daunting because they might not be able to process words on the page quickly.  I announce the play and post a synopsis and leave out the a perusal copy of the play ...
