I also work at a small independent school. Currently have 20 to 25 actors participating and somewhere between 5 and 12 tech kids. I have a separate tech director. We do three shows a year. Fall and spring open to all, grades 7 to 12. Winter is just for grades 7 to 9. When I started out I often designated ...

Personally, I love Working, a compilation of characters, great songs and the possibility of multiple roles for as many performers as you have. Sent from my iPad

-Private school here, grades 7-12 with about 200 students total in the school. Coincidentally, I attended a public school of the same size.

Almost all our older sets were created with muslin flats. I’ll dig up old pictures and scan them for you. Personally, I love their versatility and lightweight structures. I wont be back to school until Tuesday, so I will get them then. Sent from my iPad

In my theatre classes in college we were told the origin was Freytag used to describe the well made play, not Greek theatre.

Does your school have an ASCAP license to cover band and chorus? Sometimes that covers you as well.

When we did the play we were lucky that a local lumber yard donated blue packing material in four by eight sheets, about the width of luan sheets. We couldn’t build a real pool because the space was multi use. We just lay in on the ground and lit it properly to use as a pool. Worked like a charm and ...

I found this list to be so important in negotiating about use in the theatre space and in educating new heads of school about our history. Often, the sports programs have trophies to display - and this is what I have! I think all theatre teachers should keep a running document to help show their worth ...

It is awfully overwhelming. My school doesn't do a lot of musicals, but I've been here over thirty years and we have done 3-4 plays per year. In the early years, it was mostly girls and mostly plays from 9-14 characters. In the last ten years, I've done a lot of ensemble pieces that let us expand the ...

When I started, i used to love devouring the Concord Theatricals and Dramatists Play Service Catalogues, circling likely candidates, then ordering some when I had the budget. The online catalogues are a little less friendly when doing this, but you can still peruse a bunch there. Stage Agent lets you ...

We did it with a face down actor, the knife placed between the upstage arm and chest. Luckily in our scene there was a moment when the actor knifes the other in the back and helps him down to the ground. With the right staging in a proscenium set up it looks real.

Try a lot of improv games. They can make them their own. Read plays like Raisin in the Sun as a group. Try having them write their own monologues.

Our spring show is Ken Ludwig's Midsummer /Jersey. Has anyone done this show before? Our set is in good shape, but I want to double up on the cast; that is, have actors play multiple roles. If you have a list of how you did just that, I would love to hear how. I'm thinking 12 to 15 actors but I could ...

We loved this play! we used blue plastic packing donated from a local lumber yard (in4x8 sheets) to simulate the water, and a simple golden light and golden chair on wheels for the Midas scene. Our set was simply a big white flat with a door on one side and an upper level for a few gods to stand on. ...

I just saw an article about a modern, gender-neutral production in the UK. Check out places like Nick Hern's books for the script.

I'm in a smallish theatre program, too. We have a 10 by 12 shed for costumes, rigged with a dehumidifier, and a shared theatre. We have lost much of our set piece storage due to maintenance hogging the space, but we do have a decent sized prop closet. Get the arts head on board. Show evidence of theatre ...
