CJBreland is spot on!I will add that for several years, I did a children's theatre production similar to a touring group with my advanced group in the fall (with in class rehearsals). We we able to "tour" to the elementary; students assumed many design aspects. It set the tone for studying acting styles ...

Friends, Today's word from the retirees/sages is "nuture." I urge you to nurture those around you. As a theatre teacher, chances are you are passionate about your work. As you work on new productions each season and watch your students grow, it is easy to be invested in your work: rehearsals, planning ...

The answer depends on who the show is for. I've known a number of high school directors who considered six years between repeats a good number, but when you think about it, these kids have not experienced this show. If your choice is based on the kids you have now, then go for it. Their enthusiasm will ...

Check with your band teacher. They often have catalogues with affordable shoes, sometimes character shoes, for bands, show choirs, etc. Good luck!Debbie Corbin, retired

Here's an idea to build your audience: if you're doing Wizard of Oz, use 2nd graders as your munchkins. You can be inclusive and use a different class for each performance, depending on the size of your elementary school and how many performances total. (No auditions this way). Make costuming simple: ...

I see a lot of requests from teachers for suggestions of plays for women, for zoom, etc. How about Robert Fulghum's "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten"? My friend Kate Lindsay from Salina, KS is presenting it right now. Great life lessons, large group, small group, all KINDS of pos ...

Regarding makeup, I always used disposable trays & applicators to "dish out" a makeup allowance for each actor. If i was suspicious about the condition of the base ( this was Ben Nye creme), i would rake it home & "bake" it in a low oven. Many times it separated; I would stir & we'd be back on track. ...

Hi Laura,Great question!Board members are required to attend 2 in person meetings per year: Summit in July and the annual February meeting in Cincinnati. Each of these lasts about 3 days. Keep in mind that Covid has changed many things and in July 2020, Summit was virtual. In addition, Board members ...

My advice is a chain link fence surrounding your designated area with a gate you can LOCK. You will be able to see your props, and others will not have access. I think this is important with a shared space. You can install shelving & hooks inside the space.Good luck!Debbie Corbin

I had the same problem when my daughter and son were in high school. I used other sources to run auditions, required all the same prep work, etc.  The critics were surprised when my daughter was chosen for state competition in speech as a freshman, but by her senior year, critics had accepted her talent. ...

Try Bar and Ger. The play has been around for a long time. It allows some exploration of the relationship through time.

7 Brides for 7 Brothers. Although I shudder at the premise of the plot of kidnapping women for marriage, this one was a lot of fun, with lots of standout opportunities for students. And the crowd loved it. It seemed the community was already aware, so advertising was easier than, say, "Anything Goes" ...

Love this play! When auditioning, I often used a series of improv exercises, but especially for this production. I would provide situations, directing the student to take away one of the senses and watch for reactions. Good luck!Debbie CorbinRetired from Branson, MO

Perhaps send a program to the administrators' offices prior to the production with names highlighted and a post-it with "I know much you will want to catch the aspects of the production led by ____ /these folks" ? Debbie Corbin
