I think most theatre programs suffer or struggle for school wide recognition and are often overlooked by administrators, other teachers and a majority of the student body. Soooo, how can we combat that? There are many great was to do that, and I am sure that most of you have employed a variety of options ...

I would use every avenue available to promote your students and your program. Parents, students (are any of them on the student council?), direct engagement with the principal, school newspaper, support from other teachers, a multi pronged approach to highlight the inequality. Are the fine arts a requirement ...

When I first started teaching, like many, I had little budget but wanted to find an inexpensive way to build pride in the program and the students accomplishments without breaking the bank. I quickly latched onto two ideas that I followed through with until I retired a few years ago. They were quite ...

I think that the word “character” is extremely difficult for the young actor to understand the nuances of the word and what they mean. By definition: noun the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. "Running away was not in keeping with her character." personality, nature, disposition, ...

It is that time of year where everything seems to be happening all at the same time! Final productions are opening and closing, then strike, then cleanup. No sooner after the final curtain falls you are deep in planning what to do for the next season. Student final projects and portfolios are coming ...

My apologies for being a bit tardy with my Wednesday Wisdom. I had an unfortunate family crisis which delayed my post. One of my favorite memories of when I was a thespian in Troupe 182 at South High School in Wichita Kansas, was the end of year celebration when our troupe director, Miss Karen Pyles, ...

I think we have all fell into the quandary of “What Show Should I Do!” Then we go searching for just the right show for all of the students involved, although nothing quite fits all of the needs of the program. There really is a simple solution to that problem by devising your own production with ALL ...

I swear by Rosco #6055 Black Tough Prime. I would purchase a 5 gallon bucket to paint our main stage and black box floors every year. It's a paint that holds up well and has a hard surface, which absorbs light so there is no bounce from lighting instruments. It's not cheep, going for $310 plus tax, ...

Unfortunately Kristin what you described is pretty typical. My program did 3 to 4 main stage shows and 25 to 40 student directed one-acts a year. I had five classes and 4 preps like you, ran a weekly Tech Tuesday lass for students interested but couldn't get into the regular class. On top of that I was ...

What type of a teacher/director/troupe director are you? Are you an autocrat, an enforcer, a mother hen, take a lais·sez-faire attitude, do you cajole, are you empathic, a cheerleader, an encourager? It can be said that at various times we might take on any of those characteristics to help and motivate ...

Early in my teaching career, back when Ronald Regan was president, I was very happy with my theatre program and its content. My students were happy and thriving, my administration was supportive of what I was doing, and parents were proud of what their children were doing. So, “If it ain’t broke don’t ...

We generally used a 4" caster, base to edge of the wheel, for wagons made out of 2x4's with 3/4" plywood tops. This gave a 1/2" clearance and it was difficult to see the wheels. I also found that if I used a 1x3 "L" board spacer in the corner to guide placement of the caster we had plenty of room for ...

Not completely knowing your situation whether you have a stage manager in the class or tech elements, some of those students could also be assistants to you or the stage manager. Possibly have someone hold book while the stage manager concentrates on other elements. Are there small props that could be ...

There are a number of trust exercises that could bring cohesion to the group and bring the energy down. One that springs to mind is Tangle Knot, which requires the students to work together to solve the knot. There are many variations to try, only one person can speak as the leader, everyone i silent ...

I would recommend "A Piece of My Heart" by Shirley Lauro. Very powerful true drama , 6 women 1 male playing multiple characters. Unit set/flexible staging. Great character work for the actors. ------------------------------ Stewart Hawk Washington State Thespian Co-Chapter Director 206-465-4568 s ...

You could utilize an asterisk *, or some other character along with the credit. Then at the bottom of the resume you could have an explanation: Rehearsal only, production canceled due to Covid prior to performance. Wordsmith it to your liking. This way it keeps the resume cleaner/tidier. ---- ...

Amy, Years ago I directed Addams Family and used a combination of built sets and projections, which worked great. We used Broadway Media for the projections and were happy with the results. Pricing was within our budget and they were easy to work with. We didn't use all of the projections available, ...

Sarah, I directed Steel Magnolias a number of years ago. It's a lovely show great ensemble vehicle for women. One needs to be careful in balancing the personalities of the various characters. The biggest challenges we faced were technical. We had an active working sink. It took us a while to find ...
