We are just starting our rehearsal process for “Into the Woods.” I’m just beginning to process how much the costumes are going to cost us, and looking to save money in other places.

Everywhere that I’ve looked for a decent Rapunzel’s wig, it’s in the 200-250 dollar range. I would like to make one, but can’t figure out what material to use to make it look like realistic hair? And do I just use Velcro for the tear-away?

    Any suggestions are welcome.

While I haven't done Into The Woods I did a different script with the Rapunzel character and I create the wig length by starting with a medium length wig and braiding extensions together with the original wig, and each other, to create a wig that was almost 8 feet in length. It's been years but I believe the overall cost was a little over $100. I didn't have to worry about the tear-away element but you might try pinning the extensions into the original wig with bobby pins so that the extensions can slide out. Just have the kid playing Rapunzel hold below the pins for the Witch to "climb" and below for the Baker's Wife.

Like I said, I'm not sure how well this would work for you but you might be able to springboard an idea off of it. Let me know if it actually works. :)

In terms of finding something long enough, I'd start looking at extra long cosplay wigs.  They come in all different colors and lengths.

We've done Woods twice in my career and both times I rented from TRACY THEATRE ORIGIONALS. I can't speak highly enough. The old school Milky White is ADORABLE and behaves just as she should.  A little fishing line attached and she will even flee the stage by her self. The wig comes in three pieces so there are act one and two options and a piece for the Baker's wife to snatch. They also have the harp available. Hope this helps!! It is a wonderful show as long as you have really special kids who are up to it. Both times we were so pleased with the results.

    Hello there,

We did Into the Woods last year and created our own wig that worked really well. We purchased 3 or 4 Rapunzel Wigs that were 4ft. in length, and then braided them and wove them together to make a 12ft or 15ft long rapunzel braid, which was similar to the new "Tangled" version with flowers and vines interwoven in. Then, we created a small braid that was loosely tied in with a small string that the Baker's Wife could tug out, and then disconnected at the base of the neck with another string release to make a bob when the witch cuts it off.

It worked extremely well, but it was a pain to keep from being tangled over the course of the run. Here is a photo of what the end result was. Rapunzel and Witch Into the Woods SJHHS
