Metal Framed Flat Construction?

    Good Afternoon,
Most high schools theatres don't do much in the way of metal-working (particularly welding) for obvious reasons. We are fortunate enough to have a welding class at our tech center that might be willing to work with our department to build frames to our specs.  Specifically, we are thinking of making several 10' or 12' tall flats - square tube steel frame skinned with ply etc.

I remember making pieces like that back in college but always had the shop foreman's plans to follow.  I have several texts with great resources for building wooden stock scenery (i.e. Roaul's book) and there is a decent section in Holloway's book on metal working.

I guess I'm asking 1) are there any good texts out there which specifically look at metal working in theatre and 2) does anyone with experience in this area have any tips (i.e. do you also use metal jacks with the frames? specific types of hinges to join them together? any particular tech screws for attaching nailboards or skin etc.)

    Cheers,
    Guy
