Hi!  We did this show this past Fall and we don't even have what you do! ha!  We have a DJ type portable light set and used that on everything during the scene changes.  I also used a dancer in an "aurora' costume to dance during the transitional music.  It turned out great!  Have fun...what a fun show!

    Hi Brenda,

    "Almost Maine" is beautiful show!

    Aurora effect:

We (Tony Matthes is our director) created the Northern lights effect by side lighting the cyc with two colors. Green from one side and yellow(or blue or orange... can't quite remember) from the opposite side. For the transition- the cyc was lit and a person at each end would slow shake the cyc to create  waves in the fabric. As the waves moved across (in both directions) the colors would also move across the background.  We also added a sound cue of a sweep of chimes,

The dancing lights of an Aurora are stunning to witness. This cyc effect  worked well in evoking that feeling.

    A couple of extra notes:

    Shooting star effect:

We slide a small led flash light down and across the stage. We used 80# black braided fishing line for the slide line, (pad the stop or the flashlight will make noise,, and break). A black binder clip with the wire handles to hold the light facing the audience . The handles when you squeeze them come off of the binder clip so you can  loop them over the slide line. If you can, keep the low end of the side path high enough so you don't whack anyone with your falling star.

    Fire effect:

The cyc lit this way(side lit) with red/orange light and vigorous shaking will give a fire effect.

    Have fun! Best regards,

We created a false proscenium for a prior show so for Almost, Maine we focused two of our movers on the center section. The movers had a sunburst gobo which we pulled out of focus - one was blue and the other was green. We had the movers circling slowly in opposite directions and it created a really nice effect.

    Hi,

We did the show in 2012 and used a Rosco X24 projector. Rather than purchasing, we rented the unit from a regional dealer.

We put the scrim (black) just downstage of the cyc and used it as the projection surface and then used LED Christmas lights for the stars upstage of the scrim. The effect was very satisfying.

Here is a link to the effect:

Our theatre has a drop down projector screen and we used projections for northern lights. I kept an image up with the name of the show throughout, and then changed it for those scenes. I thought it was effective (if you have that kind of equipment.)

While the northern lights are the magical moment of the story, they shouldn't be ever present. They appear at the end of Her Heart and then your clock has to reset for the next story since they all start at nine.  We put our LED strip lights on the cat and flooded the stage with green light.  We added a bit of symbolism with the northern lights and only used them in the scenes that achieved the love moment.

We just dis this show. We went black box style and only used the northern lights for " Her Heart" and the the epilogue. Back wall was a cyc with a black scrim hung in front of it on the same pipe. We back lit with gobos we made from pie tins showing the verticals striation. We used blue and green gels. Simple yet effective. Not as impressive as I'd hoped for but completely student created. ------------------------------ Scott Hasbrouck Wheat Ridge CO ------------------------------
