  • 1.  Incorporating Your Theme

    Posted 09-16-2013 23:33
In Alabama, we are starting to work on incorporating this year's festival theme into our festival ideas. What I am interested in knowing is how does everyone incorporate their theme into festival? Any new and different ideas? We normally do small decorations in relation to the theme. We also tend to sell theme related items at the STO table and then make our signs relate. What else does everyone do to incorporate their theme?

    Thanks in advance!

At the beginning of our Festival we have our state board do a video on the theme of that year.  For example, last year's theme was "This is home".  So, each board member did a short response that started, "Theatre is my home because . . . "  and then each person would say what it meant to them.  We've done this the past couple of years.  Obviously, it wouldn't work with every theme, but the advantage of using video is that we can prep in advance of the Festival/conference and so all we have to do on that day is hit 'play'.

This is great Erik!  Would you post the video in the beta test library?  We would enjoy seeing it, and we haven't had any videos posted to the library so it's a good way to test out that functionality.

The GA STO select the theme each year. They use it in lots of wording and ideas for events throughout the year and conference. The year we produced our first All State Show, AIDA, they selected the theme Written in the Stars. They renamed our September planning session "Getting STARted" and the January planning session "Plan It."

The theme of the dance that year was Dancing with the STARS and encouraged students to attend dressed as a star, dance with a star, and celebrate future stars. We rolled out a red carpet at the entrance doors.

Some of the STO led workshops were

    STAR Potential
How to lead on the local, state, and international level.

How to be a STAR in your Troupe
Do you want to be more involved in your troupe? Learn how to become part of the team. Be a positive force for change and encouragement!

    STARt Leading
Anyone can be a leader! Come to this workshop to learn how!

The adult social was called An Evening with the Stars with this description:

Georgia Thespians is star struck when it comes to our brilliant and shining troupe directors! While your Thespians are busy strutting the red carpet and dancing the night away, we're rolling out a welcome of our own for all of the adults in the cluster. When you are not busy chaperoning the dance, you're invited to mingle and share your conference experiences with our guest artists from all over the galaxy. This year the social is located just upstairs in the Trade Center Dining Gallery! So strap on those moonwalkers and shoot the stairs (jet packs are optional) to sample some celestial surprises certain to keep you twinkling!

Our improv event was rebranded as Improv Lunatics

The STO Opening Skit included this outline:

    1. Imagine: a world without stars
      1. Explanation that world
    2. Explain one star
      1. Energy
      2. Purpose of stars
      3. How its created
      4. How it contributes
    3. Explain constellation
      1. Purpose of this
      2. Create shapes, stories, ideas and values
    4. Explain balance between stars
      1. Working together
      2. Producing a picture ALL TOGETHER
      3. From the collaboration of stars, we find our way through the darkness
        1. We give ourselves and find our way through the darkness
    5. Explain concept of star gazing and infinity
      1. Adjust your eyes
      2. Breathe
      3. Prepare yourself to open up to the infinite possibilities of conference

Everyone who attended the conference got a special red I AM A ★  ribbon to attach to their neck wallet.

Sometimes it seems we go theme crazy in Florida and it can be tons of fun! Last year was "The Greatest Show On Earth" and opening and closing ceremonies were very circus themed, with circus costumes on chairs and state leadership, circus backdrops, sets, and props used. At our District festival last year the theme was "The District" as a play off of The Office, and our district rep and her team did an entire episode of "The District" as a parody piece to open our closing ceremonies festivities, and it was one of the highlights of the theme incorporation at that level. ------------------------------------------- Kathleen McNulty Theatre Teacher/Director Arnold High School -------------------------------------------
