    Hi all,
I'm already on the hunt for next year's script, and I'm facing many of the same problems so many of us encounter. I will only have 7 seniors next year, and I don't know yet how many new students I'll have, so I'd like a show that could be doubled or un-doubled to accommodate various cast sizes. I will only have one guy for sure, and I have a few non-binary students as well, though they tend to be comfortable playing either gender. A comedy is okay, but I really don't want anything silly. I need dimensional characters, strong objectives, and a story that moves the audience and the actors forward from where they started. I'll post my short-list and things I want to read to see if that sparks any ideas. Thanks so much!!

    Babette's Feast
    Two Princesses of Bamarre

    The Search for Delicious
*Glory on Earth (from Nick Hern Books)
*Marian, or the True Tale of Robin Hood

You may want to take a look at A Simpler Time from Playscripts. It is sort of a collection of one-acts with time travelling guides. Some are sillier than others, but I only had three seniors and they enjoyed it. Stronger students can play multiple roles in different scenes, and younger students can learn the ropes in one.

We also did A Simpler Time (our last production before the pandemic hit) and it was a lot of fun. Though I used it as a student-led piece. Each of the individual one-acts were directed by students. Other titles you should check out if you haven't already:

    Radium Girls
    Trap (Stephen Gregg)

Good idea to do the student-directed approach for each scene! I'd read that and Trap before, so I'll pull them both back out. Everyone in our area has done Radium Girls, so that one is off the table.

I am in rehearsals for "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane." The original production cast was 2M 2F, so there's doubling built in. We're doing it with 13, and almost everyone has two parts in addition to other group roles. It's a lovely story with some strong dramatic scenes as well as some lightness and humor.

(Of course, I'm rooting for you to choose "Two Princesses of Bamarre" & got a lift just seeing it on your shortlist!)
