Male Monologue - Psychologically Intense?

Hello everyone! One of my senior actors really wants to tackle a challenging monologue where the character is intensely tormented, having a psychic break, etc. He is a serious performer and is ready for this. Almost all my resources are printed and are at my school. Any thoughts, or gems, that you have used? I thought of the famous Taxi Driver "You talking' to me?" piece, but it isn't really rich in terms of text. Thanks for any thoughts, and the best to everyone out there. I love these Forums and they have been so so helpful during Covid!

I think there are a few good ones in Gruesome Playground Injuries by Rajiv Joseph.

Thank you very much! The title alone sounds fantastic. I would have to be able to get my hands on it in the next week or so; I will check if there is an online purchase/preview option. Thank you again.

Take a look at Nijinsky's Last Dance. It's a one man show set after Nijinsky is in the insane asylum and his reflections on his life. There are some portions that address sexuality so, depending on your community, you may need to choose a section that doesn't deal with this. It's a Playscripts, Inc piece, so you can read most of it online.

Also, I love Gruesome Playground Injuries as well.

Thank you very much, Shira. I have never heard of that show but I love the sound of it. Thanks also for including the Playscript source. The last role this student played was the judge in The Crucible so this would be a great contrast!

You might consider "I Might be Edgar Allan Poe" bu Dawson Nichols.  Its long but you could cut it down.

Jan Powell an actor/director suggests having students write their own monologues.  They can use story lines from favorite books.  There are many benefits and advantages for personal growth with this assignment.

There are a number of good monologues in Marat/Sade which take place in an asylum.
