    Hey friends,

So we are producing The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, for part of our set design we want a set of double doors w/ crashbars (much like the doors you see in school buildings) to use as a upstage center exit. Ordering online has the pricing at $500+ and that's no good. Any ideas for how to build something like this for under $500? I just needs to be functional-- the crash bars don't have to be real or anything like that. I've included an image for reference so you know what kind of doors I'm talking about.

Any ideas or direction would be amazingly helpful!

    Thank you!

    - Kerry

I just Googled "building doors for stage sets" and a lot of info came up.

    Hey George,

Yeah, that was my first step, but I didn't see anything specifically addressing the kinds of doors I want to build. I was hoping there were some folks here had some experience with those types of doors specifically (maybe even someone who's done this specific show before!).

Just build a flat frame for the door and router out the corner block so it is not seen by the audience.  Cover with that shrink to fit window plastic if you are looking for a glass look or cover with luan for a solid core door.  If you go with the more modern looking panic bar, it is basically just a box with a piece of plywood for the push plate-- paint silver and you're off to the races.

So you could build them out of wood and just tweak the cosmetics to make them look like the double doors, but have you thought of seeing if your community has a repurspose center that sells items like this?  You could also reach out to local contractors or builders and see if they would donate one to you in exchange for advertising in your program/playbill.

    Hi,
    A way for double doors:
    Use "Hollywood flat" construction.
    Door panels-use 1"x3" sides.
    Wall/frames-use 1"x4" sides.
(This will create an insert look when the doors are hinged to the walls.)
I will attach pictures of a similar construction with same sized sides.
